The first part of the Indo-French Joint Naval Exercise, Varuna 19.1 was conducted off the Goa Coast from 1st to 10th May 2019. 86th YEAR: IAF DAY PARADE


The Ceremonial Parade to mark the 86th Indian Air Force Day on 8th October 2018 was held at the WAC’s Hindan Air Base, near Delhi. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa was the Reviewing Officer of the IAF Parade and scintillating Air Power Show. The day’s events commenced with a display by the IAF’s Akash Ganga Para Jumping Team, followed by an impressive parade. There was a display of drill movements by the Air Warrior Drill Team. The celebrations culminated with a breathtaking Air Show showcasing most air capabilities of the IAF.


IAF’s Static Displays
The IAF’s Fighter and Transport Aircraft, Helicopters, Radars and Missiles on display at Hindan had the Strategic Airlifter Boeing C-17 Globemaster-III, the indigenous BEL Air Surveillance Radar. On display was the Indian Air Force MiG-29 Air Superiority Fighter. Another aircraft on display and being inducted in large numbers, was the MI-17V5 Medium-Lift Helicopter, specially suited for high-altitude and night operations.Then, the displays had the Jaguar Fighter, with the BAE Systems’ Hawk Mk132 Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT). The MiG-21 Bis, Mirage 2000 Fighter, Dhruv ALH Mk.III, Su-30MKI with BrahMos-Air Variant Missile was also displayed. Further, on static display were the Dassault Aviation Mirage 2000 Multi-Role Fighter aircraft with an Air Defence as well as Strike capability. New addition was Rafael’s Spyder ADS.


The C-17 Globemaster-III, C-130J Super Hercules, Tiger Moth, Rudra Attack Helicopters, Mi-17 V5s, MiG-21s, Jaguar, LCA Tejas, Hawk AJTs of Surya Kiran Aerobatics Team (SKAT), Sarang Dhruv ALHs and Su-30 MKIs participated in the IAF’s breathtaking Air Displays over the Hindan Air Base, with 6 C-130Js parked.


The Chief of the Air Staff was the Reviewing Officer for the 86th Air Force Day Parade. Air Chief Marshal B. S. Dhanoa reviewed the parade and took the salute. Three Mi-17 V5 helicopters of 155 Helicopter Unit flewpast the dais, in VIC formation at a height of 60 metres, trailing the Air Force Ensign to commemorate the 86th Air Force Anniversary. The Air Chief then proceeded to inspect the parade, which was followed by the March Past.


Scintillating Air Display
The Hercules formation consisting of three C-130Js in a VIC formation, came up first. Then, the IAF’s C-17 Globemaster-III, escorted by 2 Su-30MKIs flew past presenting an aerial salute and displaying its prowess. The LCA Tejas too did its air display.


The IAF’s Air Display commenced with flag bearing Sky Divers of famous Akash Ganga Team, who jumped from an An-32 aircraft. Flypast comprised of Mi-17 V5 and Rudra helicopters, Dornier, C-130J and C-17 transport aircraft, Jaguar, Bison, MiG-29, Mirage 2000 and Su-30MKI Fighter Aircraft. Dakota, Tiger Moth and Harvard of the IAF Vintage flight also participated in the flypast. Post the flypast, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) carried out Aerobatic Display. The Ambassadors of Indian Air Force, Surya Kiran Aerobatics Team (SKAT), comprising nine Hawk 132 aircraft and the Helicopter Aerobatics Team, Sarang enthralled the audience with breathtaking Formation Aerobatics display.  After the parade, all visitors also got an opportunity to witness Static Display of aircraft, Weapon, Radar and Missiles Systems of IAF.


Participating in the Flying Display were some Frontline Fighter aircraft in the IAF’s Inventory. The formation dispensed flares as they saluted the Chief of the Air Staff. Leading the fighter pack were the IAF Jaguars. Behind the Jaguars were three MiG-21 Bisons, both in VIC formation. A lone Su-30MKI carrying out a Vertical Charlie manoeuvre followed. Then, was the SKAT Hawk Aerobatics Team, and the airspace opened up to the colourful and majestic Dhruv ALH Sarangs Aerobatics Display.


IAF Rotorcraft: With the Apache & Chinook having their 1st test-flights recently, the indigenous Dhruv ALH Mark-III is already under induction, followed by the Weapon System Integrated Version, i.e. the Rudra ALH Mark-IV, and the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) developed by HAL has progressed to an advanced stage of manufacturing and will be inducted soon, with HAL’s Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) also under flight-testing.
