IAI Expands Operations in India

IAI will now collaborate with Wipro Enterprises on the production of Composite Aero Structures and build a new Maintenance Center for Advanced Air Defence Systems in India with the Kalyani Group, and transfer UAV technology and production capabilities to DTL and Elcom Systems. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) also  signed strategic agreements with two Indian companies during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel. IAI and Wipro Enterprises have entered an agreement to collaborate in the manufacturing of Composite Aero Structures in India, including establishing a facility for this purpose. The agreement stipulates that IAI will Transfer Technology and assist Wipro in building a plant for Manufacturing and Assembly of Aero Structures for the Civilian Aerospace Sector. The agreement forms the foundation for broader future collaboration between the two companies in India and is expected to support IAI's leadership in this arena, while supporting the implementation of future projects.

IAI Expands JV with Kalyani Group
The new MoU covers the establishment of a Maintenance Center for selected Advanced Air Defence Systems in Hyderabad in the state of Telangana. The two companies have also agreed on expanding their Joint Operations to development, manufacturing, and marketing of Precise Ammunition Systems. In February 2017, IAI had inked an MoU with Kalyani Group on establishing a Joint Venture that will develop, build, market and manufacture selected Air Defence Systems and Light-weight Special Purpose Munitions, in accordance with the Indian Government’s ‘Make-in-India’ policy.

Joseph Weiss, IAI's President and CEO said, "India has been IAI's Partner for many years as well as a key market for us. The Indian Government 'Make-in-India' initiative requires international companies to rethink their operations in India. The changes in India have not gone unnoticed by IAI. We have been revamping all of our operations in India and believe that together with our Partners in Kalyani Group we will preserve our position in India for both countries continued growth."

IAI & Kalyani to Build New Maintenance Center in India for Advanced Air Defence Systems
As part of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel, executives from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd. (KSSL), subsidiary of Bharat Forge Limited, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) addressed to expand their Joint Venture in India.

Baba Kalyani, Chairman and MD, Bharat Forge Limited said: “In line with our Prime Minister’s idea of forging a Technology-based Partnership with Israel, this Joint Venture with IAI furthers the idea of Indian Government’s ‘Make-in-India’ initiative and will provide world class solutions including Life-Cycle Support to Indian Defence. I also consider that it augments the Group’s efforts in developing and manufacturing state-of-the-art indigenous systems in niche technology areas of Defence Sector in India.”

Boaz Levi, Executive Vice President and General Manager of IAI’s Systems, Missiles & Space Group said: "The MoU entered today is a strategic agreement for us. Combining the development capabilities and the vast knowhow accumulated in IAI in Air Defence and Missiles with Kalyani’s advanced production and excellent technological capabilities would help us offer the most advanced systems to India’s Defence Forces. The establishment of a local Maintenance Center will offer the best technical and operational support to our customers in India, while implementing the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative. We look forward to investing more in Air Defence and Missiles with Kalyani Group, our Partner in India.”

Rajinder Singh Bhatia, President and CEO - Defence, Bharat Forge Limited said: “The Joint Venture Company will combine IAI’s knowledge and experience as a developer of high-technology selected Missile Systems, with the engineering excellence and manufacturing capabilities of the Kalyani Group.”

Israel Aerospace’s Accelerator Seeks to Support Indian Start-Ups: Scouting for Aviation & Defence Companies
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), which is to supply systems for Barak-8 Surface-to-Air Missiles to Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) for installation on Indian warships, is looking to engage with start-ups that work in the field of Aviation and Defence. The decision sparked interest among Indian conglomerates such as the Kalyani Group and Piramal Enterprises, besides others. Piramal Enterprises holds a minority equity stake in Israeli firm BlueBird Aero Systems, which manufactures Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems and peripheral equipment for Aviation. IAI is keen to build what is being referred to as the country’s first Israeli Aviation Accelerator.

The Bedek Aviation Group, IAI’s biggest Division that conducts Heavy Aircraft Maintenance and Upgrades, and Converts aircraft to various specified configurations such as Aerial Refuelling and Cargo, will host the accelerator. The aim is to identify start-ups that have passed the seed stage, so that their products can be used by IAI. The start-ups will utilise IAI’s Infrastructural Facilities as well as professional guidance from leading Aviation specialists.

Israel’s Aviation Accelerator has sparked interest among Indian firms, with the US$ 3 billion Kalyani Group looking to benefit given its association with IAI. In February, the Group’s Defence arm Kalyani Strategic Systems had inked an MoU with IAI to incorporate a Joint Venture company in India.

Baba Kalyani, Chairman of Bharat Forge, the flagship company of the Kalyani Group, said that collaborating with hi-tech Aviation and Defence experts as well as start-ups would help Indian companies “get access to critical technology, which is the need of the hour in Defence and Aviation.” The Group, which is also into Aerospace, has built strong ties with foreign partners over the years for specialised raw materials. It is keen to become a strategic player in the Global Aerospace Supply Chain, with its forged and machined products and assemblies, and aims to achieve US$ 100 million in revenues from that sector.

“Our JV with IAI will manufacture specific Air Defence Systems. Since we have been supplying components for aircraft and make metal components in super alloys and titanium, new technologies used by start-ups in the Aerospace Sector could be critical for India’s Aviation space,” said Baba Kalyani.

Wipro & IAI to Make Aircraft Structures
Wipro Infrastructure Engineering (WIN), a unit of Wipro Enterprises, and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) will set up a factory to make Composite Aerostructure parts and assemblies for Aircraft Manufacturers. Wipro Enterprises was spun out of Information Technology (IT) Services major Wipro in 2013. It focuses on two major businesses — consumer care, and Industrial Engineering & Aerospace.

WIN and IAI, Israel's Aerospace and Defence Manufacturer, announced the strategic alliance, when Prime Minister Modi was on the three-day visit to Israel. Wipro said, “The facility will make Composite Structures in India for global markets and address the compliance requirements of IAI, other OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and Tier-1 Suppliers to meet Defence Offset guidelines detailed by the Ministry of Defence. Wipro, which set up India’s first Aerospace Actuator Manufacturing Facility in Bengaluru, said WIN expects the Aerospace Industry to be strategic for its future.

“This partnership will not only strengthen our presence in the growing Aerospace Sector and standing as a partner of choice for global OEMs and Tier-1s, but will also help us explore emerging business opportunities in key markets,” said Pratik Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, WIN, & Executive Director, Wipro Enterprises.

WIN had acquired HR Givon Ltd, an Israel-headquartered manufacturer of metallic parts and assemblies for the Aerospace Industry, in 2016 to increase its product portfolio and to expand its global footprint.
Shlomi Karako, General Manager of the Commercial Aircraft Group, IAI, said its relationship with India was “extremely important” as the country was a major strategic customer.

IAI’s Strategic Teaming Agreements with DTL & Elcom Systems
IAI, Dynamatic Technologies Ltd (DTL) and Elcom Systems have announced their cooperation to jointly address the needs of the Indian UAV market. The cooperation agreement supports the existing infrastructure in India for current MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) programmes, while advancing the Indian Government’s "Make-in-India" initiative as well. According to the agreement, IAI will transfer UAV technology and production capabilities to DTL and Elcom, in order to enable indigenous capability for UAV Systems in India.

Shaul Shahar, IAI Executive Vice President and General Manager of IAI's Military Aircraft Group said: "India is one of IAI's main strategic customers for 25 years; hence our relationship with Indian Users, customers, and companies is crucial. It is, therefore, our intention to transfer a significant part of our UAV activity to India in the near future, in accordance with the 'Make-in-India' policy."
