Indian Army’s Artillery ‘Make Indian’ Drive

The Regiment of Artillery is the second largest arm of the Indian Army, and with its Guns, Mortars, Rocket Launchers, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Surveillance Systems, Missiles and Artillery firepower it constitutes almost one-sixth of the Army’s total strength. While the Indian Army’s Artillery Regiment celebrates its 189th Year, the Directorate of Artillery has crossed 30 years without any 155mm Guns inducted since Bofors in 1986, except 3 Dhanush Guns for trials. The Acquisition Plan is for various types of 155mm/52-Calibre Guns, under the overall Artillery Modernisation Programme of about R.100,000 crore. The 155mm acquisitions, delayed at different stages, include 145 Light Guns, 1,580 Towed Gun Systems (TGS), 814 Mounted Gun Systems (MGS), 180 Self-Propelled Wheeled Guns and 100 Tracked 155mm Artillery Gun Systems. The indigenous efforts of DRDO & OFB have met with success lately, saw 114 Dhanush 155mm Guns orders placed with OFB. With Evaluation Trials undertaken and with ‘Make-in-India’ drive gaining momentum, some Private players have teamed-up with global leaders hoping to win.

Saab to Modify & Upgrade Swedish Mine Countermeasures Vessels

Defence and Security company Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) to modify and upgrade two Swedish Navy Koster-class Mine Countermeasures Vessels (MCMVs). The order covers the period 2016-2017 and the order value amounts to SEK147 Million. Work on the vessels will be undertaken in Karlskrona. Saab will upgrade and modify of two of Sweden's Koster-class MCMVs. The contract includes options for additional orders in 2017-2018 amounting to a further SEK139 Million, if exercised. The contract covers mission system modifications and upgrades, upgrade of the Propulsion System plus modernisation of CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) detection & protection capabilities.

"Sweden is a world leader in Mine Countermeasures. We have a long tradition of constructing Mine Countermeasures Vessels with glass fibre hulls. This material not only gives excellent operational capabilities, but also provides high availability and low life-cycle costs," says Gunnar Wieslander, Head of Saab business unit Saab Kockums. The Koster-class MCMVs are part of a series of vessels launched at Karlskronavarvet during the 1980s. They were modified in the beginning of the 2000s to add new capabilities, including Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). Along with traditional Mine-hunting, Sweeping and Clearance tasks, the vessels can also assist in Anti-Submarine Operations.

Saab Advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Training
Saab had earlier received an order from the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) for delivery of advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Training, including the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle AUV62 in training configuration. Deliveries will take place during the period 2016-2019.

As part of the Letter of Intent (LoI) between Saab and FMV, announced in June 2014, and which supports the Swedish Armed Forces’ underwater capabilities for the period 2015-2024, Saab  got an order for the delivery of Advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare Training. Included in the contract is the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle AUV62-AT, configured for Anti-Submarine Training, and the delivery of support and maintenance to the customer. Saab is also responsible for supporting the customer’s training activities during the entire contract period.

“For the Swedish Navy this order means that they will have an increased capability and flexibility to practice and train their units in Anti-Submarine Warfare”, says Anne-Marie Vösu, Head of Saab’s business unit Underwater Systems. “Saab’s experience and expertise within Autonomous Underwater Vehicles means that we can offer world-leading training opportunities for our customers in Anti-Submarine Warfare”.

The AUV62-AT is an advanced and highly modern and capable system for cost-efficient training of a Navy’s ASW Forces. The AUV62-AT is an artificial acoustic target that mimics a Submarine in a way that is compatible with any Torpedo and Sonar System on the market today. The System fully replaces the use of a Submarine in the role as a manoeuvering training target. With the AUV62-AT, Saab offers a state-of-the-art training capability for demanding customers investing in the future.

Saab Receives First Order Under Australian ANZAC-Class Warship Agreement
Saab has also received an order from the Australian Government regarding sustainment of the Combat System on Australia's ANZAC-Class Frigates. The order value amounts to AUD 37 Million (approximately SEK 248 Million) and covers services from July 2016 until December 2017. This is Saab Australia's first order under the recently signed Warship Asset Management Agreement (WAMA). WAMA is an Asset Management Organisation, which is responsible for the overall performance and delivery of seaworthy ANZAC-Class Warships and support infrastructure to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Under the long-term asset management agreement, Saab Australia, which is part of Saab business area Surveillance, will provide on-going Engineering Support Services in both Western Australia and South Australia.

"The agreement and this order reflect our highly successful and long term commitment to the ANZAC Frigate and the Royal Australian Navy" says Dean Rosenfield, Managing Director for Saab Australia. "The ANZAC Frigates are the trusted workhorse of the Navy and Saab has played a major role in evolving the fighting capability of the Ships over the last 20 years. We look forward to continue working with our local partners to ensure the ANZACs continue to fulfill Navy's needs," says Rosenfield.

Saab is part of the WAMA Team charged with ensuring that the ANZAC-Class Ships remain at a high level of availability and capability for the Royal Australian Navy. For three decades, Saab has successfully delivered Naval Combat Systems to the Royal Australian Navy. Together with CEA Technologies, Saab's Anti-Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) System has delivered one the most advanced Naval Frigate combat capabilities in the world. The next generation of Saab's Combat Management System is building on this pedigree. Commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, local production and support makes Saab the lead contender to provide the Combat System for Royal Australian Navy’s Future Frigate programme.
