NAVANTIA S-80 Class Submarine

NAVANTIA S-80 - A Latest Generation Submarine

With a history of more than 300 years linked to the construction of ships for the Navy, Navantia is a State-owned and Strategic Technology Company for the Defence of Spain. Its areas of specialisation range from Shipbuilding (Surface and Submarine), to the Design and Integration of Systems with a high technological content and life-cycle support and high value-added services. Navantia has started the construction of the first of three Corvettes that will be built for the Royal Saudi Navy (RSNF)

NAVANTIA S-80 Class Submarine

The Navantia S-80 Class are State-of-the-Art Conventional Ocean-going Submarines designed and built entirely in Spain. One of its outstanding features is its Third-Generation Air-Independent Propulsion System (AIP) known as BEST (Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technology), which consists of a Bioethanol Reformer to produce hydrogen, which in turn reacts with oxygen in a Fuel Cell generating electricity.

This system enables the vessel to extend its endurance, operating independently underwater for up to three weeks, which considerably reduces its level of detectability.

It is a highly Automated Submarine that thanks to the State-of-the-Art Platform Control System developed by Navantia Sistemas, allows it to be operated by a limited number of crew members (32 sailors and 8 berths for additionally embarked personnel), which can reach an underwater speed of more than 19 knots, and a maximum depth capacity of over 300 m. It is approximately 80 m long, 7 m in diameter, has a submerged displacement of 3,000 tonnes.

The S-80 Class also features a Combat System developed by Navantia Sistemas in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, with capacity, unique (for NATO and EU) amongst Conventional Submarines of similar characteristics, to launch Land-Attack Tactical Missiles.

The S-80 is a product prepared for export, adapting to the requirements of each client and to the participation demands of the local industry in each country, as Navantia has already done for the Indian Navy offer.

Navantia has been involved in the design, construction, and life-cycle of Submarines for almost a hundred years, in close collaboration with the Spanish Navy. During that time, it has worked with different models, its own or in collaboration with a variety of Spanish and foreign partners, developing construction, maintenance or upgrading programmes.

Navantia’s evolution where Submarines are concerned (from Class B to the current S-80, and including the Scorpene Submarine for export) and its international experience with Defence Export Projects, has enabled Navantia to firmly establish a solid base of expertise and skill that allows Navantia to offer clients from all over the world a wide range of Services that include: Advice for the definition of needs; Life-cycle; Upgrading and implementations to increase the life-cycle; Training; Simulators; Integration of the Air-Independent Propulsion System (AIP); Training local industry in Technology Transfer Projects; Digital Services, etc.

Navantia Fits the Hydrogen Propulsion System BEST AIP Into a S-80 Class Submarine

At the end of November 2024, Navantia's Shipyard in Cartagena (Spain) had completed the fitting of the Hydrogen-based Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP) into the S-83 "Cosme García" Submarine, the third of the S-80 Class Series of four Submarines, built by the company for the Spanish Navy.

This acomplishment is a fundamental milestone in the S-80 Programme, unprecedented in the history of shipbuilding in Spain. This technology will provide the Spanish Navy's Submarines with the ability to remain submerged for up to several weeks, compared to a few days for Conventional Diesel-Electric Submarines. This development, which has been a first-class challenge for the National Industry of Spain, allowing Navantia to offer unique capabilities in tenders for International Submarine Construction, not only in India, but also in some other countries as Canada, Poland or Philippines.

The AIP System, commercially named BEST (Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technology) by Navantia, and unique in the world, is an innovative energy production plant that allows the Submarine's Batteries to be recharged while it is submerged, avoiding periodic snorkelling manoeuvres to recharge it, where the vessel is detectable and more vulnerable.

This plant is based on a bio-ethanol reforming process - a renewable fuel obtained from raw materials of plant origin - to produce a hydrogen-rich stream that is fed, together with pure oxygen, to a fuel cell to produce electricity discreetly.

Unlike the systems already operational in other Navies, Navantia's AIP is a Third-Generation System as it does not require stored hydrogen onboard; instead, the system generates it itself, which provides a tactical and safety advantage. This evolution allows Spanish Submarines to have a greater amount of on-board energy, being able to sail for up to three weeks in immersion with signatures comparable to those of pure Electric Navigation with Batteries.

The Section 3 of the S-83 "Cosme García" Submarine, which houses the on-board AIP Equipment, the Liquid Oxygen and Bio-ethanol Tanks and the Auxiliary Systems necessary for its operation, observing the demanding work and safety procedures being carried out in the construction of the S-83 Submarine.

Navantia - Reliable Partner for India

Besides having a tested AIP System, Navantia is fully committed with the P-75 (India) Make in India initiative. It has gone itself through a similar experience over the last decades, evolving from a Shipbuilder using foreign designs, to a turnkey supplier able to go through all design, build, commission and life-cycle support phases, positioning Navantia to assist other Navies and International Shipbuilders with a wide range of Transfer of Technology Solutions. Navantia is confident in bringing its best endeavour and commitment in order to meet both the Indian Navy needs and the Government’s AtmaNirbhar Bharat Strategy in the Defence Sector.

The joint bid by L&T and Navantia based on the Spanish Navantia S-80Plus-Class of Submarine, is in contention for the procurement order of the Indian Navy, and Navantia’s technical proposal had also earlier been declared technically compliant. According to the Partnership Agreement signed between Navantia and L&T, the Spanish Company will design the P-75(I) Submarines based on its S-80+ Class of Submarines, the first of which was delivered to Spanish Navy in November 2023, while L&T will be responsible for actually constructing the Submarines in India.

The S-80 AIP System is capable of operating at any depth and in all operational conditions, allowing it to adapt to any Naval Mission and making it the most Advanced AIP System developed on the market. The S-80 Class Submarines are the only 3,000-ton submarines in the world equipped with this system. This system, combined with a design and production system aimed at creating an almost undetectable submarine, opens the door to export opportunities, reinforcing the company’s international positioning and its entire ecosystem of collaborators.

In June 2024, the representatives of the Indian Ministry of Defence visited Navantia Shipyard in Spain to get up close and personal with the S-80 Submarine AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) System tests. These tests were successfully completed by Navantia at its Facilities in Cartagena. The tests were attended by the Technical Evaluation Committee of the Indian MoD, as well as representatives of Navantia's Partner Company, Larsen and Toubro (L&T).

The Indian Delegation had the opportunity to test the Critical Equipment of this Project, which incorporates the latest technologies, such as the Third-Generation BEST AIP and the Advanced Sensor Suite. During these tests, the Batteries of the S-81 IsaacPeral Submarine, already in Service with the Spanish Navy, were charged, satisfactorily demonstrating the operation of the AIP System from the S-81 Submarine's Platform Control System.

In the tests, different performing and operating conditions were tested, including the operation of the Submarine's Main Electric Motor at different speeds and levels. The results showed that Navantia's Third-Generation AIP is the most advanced, compact and safe on the market, having the largest capacity, that will increase Diving Endurance. A proved AIP with these premises was required by the Indian Navy from the beginning, claims Navantia.

Spain commissioned its first S-80 Plus-Class Submarine, the S-81 Isaac Peral, on November 30th, 2023. S-80Plus are designed for Longer-Range Missions and would mature as the first Spanish Boats fitted with AIP for Extended Undersea Endurance.

The S-80 does add Attack Capabilities including Heavy-Weight Torpedoes (HWTs), Mines, Submarine-Launched Anti-Ship and Cruise Missiles, etc. The range of weapons which are reportedly tested on the S-80 are notably the DM2A4 Heavy-Weight Torpedo (and varieties of NATO Standard Heavy Torpedoes), a Sub-Harpoon Missile Fitted for Tomahawk Missile with Torpedo Countermeasures System. Additionally, the S-80's Attack Capabilities also include the capacity to Launch Submarine Cruise Missiles (SLCM), which is somehow unique for non-nuclear NATO Submarines.

S-80-Class is also equipped with Advanced Intelligent Naval Mines currently in production, with three different models for different depths and characteristics of the waters: Moored Mines, Low-Profile Mines, and Cylindrical Mines. In Next-Generation Submarines, that takes place with Sensors and Processors which Detect Magnetic, Electric, Acoustic, Pressure, and Seismic influences.

Navantia Begins Construction of the First of Three New Avante 2200 Class Corvettes for Saudi Arabia

Navantia had started, last 18th December, the construction of a new Corvette for Saudi Arabia, with the celebration of the first Steel Cutting Ceremony, in San Fernando (Southern Spain) Facilities.

This event marked the effective start of the construction of the first of three Corvettes that will be built for the Royal Saudi Navy (RSNF), according to the new contract signed, one week before, between the Spanish Company and the Saudi Ministry of Defence in Riyadh. The Steel Cutting was carried out in an Innovative Workshop that uses the latest Hybrid Laser Technology, significantly reducing production times. This workshop is one of the largest investments made at the San Fernando Shipyard and will allow Navantia, alongside other initiatives undertaken at all its centres, to position itself at the forefront of Shipbuilding.

This contract is the second one for Avante 2200 Class Corvettes with the Saudi Royal Navy, after completing the first contract which included the construction and delivery of five units.

With the effective start of this new contract, the last of the three ships is scheduled for delivery in 2028. Navantia will be responsible for the delivery of the first unit in Spain and will finalise the second and third units in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the Installation, Integration and trials of the Hazem Combat System to be done by SAMINavantia, similar to the works carried out on the fourth and fifth units of the first contract. SAMINavantia will supply the complete Combat System of the three Corvettes.

With the Kingdom's ambition to localise Shipbuilding Capabilities, the contract also includes a comprehensive training plan for more than 100 Saudi Engineers and the manufacturing of blocks for the third Corvette in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Navantia will transfer the Intellectual Property Rights of the Avante 2200 Design to GAMI, enabling the design's utilization for the manufacturing of future Corvettes for the Kingdom, as well as for potential export markets.

Navantia will supply an Integrated Logistical Support package, the training of the crews, and an operational training by the Spanish Navy at Rota Naval Base in Spain, where Navantia will provide Support Services to the Royal Saudi Naval Force during such training.

Avante 2200 Corvette  Model

This second batch Series of Corvettes for Saudi Arabia will be similar to the first batch, with a design based on Navantia's Avante 2200 Corvette Model, which is a Multi-Purpose Vessel specially designed for Patrolling and Monitoring of the Exclusive Economic Zone, Maritime Traffic Surveillance and Control Missions, Search and Rescue Missions and assistance to other vessels, among others. In addition, the vessels will have an important capacity for the defence of strategic assets, Intelligence, and Anti-Submarine, Anti-Aircraft, Anti-Surface and Electronic Warfare Capabilities.

The Corvettes are designed to be cutting-edge, maximising Navantia's participation by incorporating its own products such as the HAZEM Combat System (through the SAMINavantia Joint Venture), the HERMESYS Integrated Communications System, the DORNA Fire Control System, the Integrated Platform Control System, the MINERVA Integrated Bridge, the Propulsion Engines (under licence from MTU), and the Diesel Generator Sets and the Gearboxes (under licence from Schelde). Finally, the Repairs business unit will also participate in the programme with the work to be carried out during the Corvettes' Dry Docking in San Fernando.

The event, held just a week after the signing of the new contract between Navantia and the Saudi Ministry of Defence in Riyadh, was attended by Navantia President Ricardo Domínguez and the Rear Admiral of the RSNF, Mansour Aljuaid.
The Sheet Metal Cutting was carried out in the Open-Plane Units Workshop, which is finalising its Equipment and will be a key milestone in the production process of future constructions at the shipyard. This first Sheet Metal Cutting marks the beginning of Navantia’s second contract for Avante 2200 Class Corvettes with the Saudi Royal Navy, after completing the first contract which included the construction and delivery of five units. This contract represents around four million hours of work for the Bay of Cadiz, generating an impact of up to 2,000 jobs (direct, indirect and induced employment).

The Sky's No Limit: Lockheed Martin's SPY-7 Radar for Spain's NAVANTIA F-110 Frigate Successfully Tracks Airborne Objects

In partnership with Navantia, Spain's National Defence and Shipbuilding Company, Lockheed Martin, a global leader in Aerospace and Deterrence, has successfully demonstrated the first live track for the Spain F-110 Multi-Mission Frigate's AN/SPY-7(V)2 Radar. The tracking event was conducted at Lockheed Martin's Aegis SCOMBA Integration Center (ASIC) in Moorestown, New Jersey.

"During the milestone event, the SPY-7 Radar System's Tactical Hardware and Software accurately tracked Airborne objects, which confirms the system's maturity and readiness for comprehensive performance testing," said Chandra Marshall, Vice President of Multi-Domain Combat Solutions at Lockheed Martin. "Lockheed Martin has rapidly scaled and advanced its Naval Radar Technology and Solutions to meet the evolving needs of Spain, ensuring strategic advantage."

"This achievement marks a critical milestone in the F-110 Programme and showcases the progress made, ensuring that the programme is on track to meet its scheduled commissioning date for the first frigate in 2028", said Carlos Lopez, F-110 Program Director at Navantia.

In the coming months, Lockheed Martin will conduct thorough testing of all components of the SPY-7 Radar System and Aegis Tactical Equipment, ensuring that Spain receives a Fully Integrated and Calibrated System. Formal delivery of the SPY-7 Radar is scheduled for 2026, representing a key milestone for the construction of the vessel and her Combat System Light-off.

The F-110 Frigate is scheduled to join the Spanish Navy's Fleet, with the first two ships currently under construction. Lockheed Martin and Navantia are collaborating on the integration of the Aegis and SCOMBA Combat System Tactical Computer Programmes, which will be tested at the ASIC and Spanish Navy's Land-based Test Site (CIST) in Rota Naval Base, Spain.

First Barge Shock Test of F110 Programme Equipment Successfully Completed

On October 31st, 2024, the first barge shock test for the F110 Programme was successfully completed, will allows the shock qualification of the Diesel Generator, main switchboard, and fuel purifier module, equipment that will be installed on the frigates that Navantia is currently building for the Spanish Navy at the Ferrol Shipyard.

The successful completion of these demanding tests, which submit the operating equipment to three Underwater Detonations of increasing severity, represents a historic milestone for Navantia, as it is the first time that Navantia coordinates the execution of this type of tests; for Navantia Engines, for the shock qualification equivalent to the MIL Standard of the Navantia-MTU20V4000 “encapsulated” Diesel Generator, with 100% Navantia Engines design and manufacturing, currently the only alternative with these characteristics in the NATO environment; and for the F110 Programme, due to the relevance of the qualified equipment, which are part of the Ships’ Electrical and Propulsion Plants.

The tests were carried out on the “Shock Test Vehicle STV02” barge that Thornton Tomasetti Defence Ltd (TTDL) uses for this type of shock tests at the Limehillock Facilities (Scotland).

The working team included representatives from Navantia and TTDL, as well as the manufacturers of the tested equipment: Navantia Engines, along with Rolls Royce (MTU) and Alconza, for the Diesel Generator, Elinsa for the main switchboard, and GEA Westfalia for the fuel purifier module.

Also present were representatives from Defence, the F110 Program Office of the General Directorate of Armament and Material (DGAM), the American company Element (formerly NTS), which acts as a third party for Defence, ensuring the correlation between the test carried out in Scotland (British Standard) and the one that would be carried out in the USA (MIL Standard), as well as a Canadian technologist who has been advising Navantia on vulnerability issues for more than 25 years.

The Navantia and TTDL Teams are now working on dismantling the equipment from the barge, already shock qualified, and assembling the next equipment, the Electric Propulsion Motor and its frequency converter, which will be shock tested on the STV02 barge at the end of November.
