In an Exclusive Interview to Chanakya, JOHNNY STØA, Regional Marketing Director, Missile Systems, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS, elaborated on the NSM & JSM success story, with the Missiles lately being the Chosen Missile of Choice for Anti-Ship Role for over a dozen countries, with Indian Navy considering the NSM-AL for its MH-60Rs Fleet.

Q. Briefly tell us about the Kongsberg Missile Systems Division, which provides state-of-the-art Missiles for Ships, Vehicles, Helicopters, Patrol and Fighter Aircraft?

A. Kongsberg Missile Systems is one of six Divisions in Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace of the KONGS-BERG Group. Kongsberg has been developing missiles since the 1960s, with particularly high expertise, competence and experience in the area of state-of-the-art Medium to Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles.

Q. With the Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile (NSM) & Joint Strike Missile (JSM) achieving tremendous success in the international market, with already being selected by 10 countries, including Norway, Poland, Malaysia, Germany, USA, Japan, Romania, Canada, Australia & Spain, tell us about the success story of NSM & JSM?

A.  The NSM was developed to meet the Royal Norwegian Navy's (RNoN) requirements for a highly discriminative, low-observable and Sea-Skimming Anti-Ship Missile that is able to penetrate shipboard defences of larger warships, and operate effectively in both blue water and littoral environments. The RNoN conducted a comprehensive study of the existing Anti-Ship Missile market, including those that were being designed and/or developed. However, they found that none of the missiles on the market met their cardinal operational requirements. Hence, a Joint Development Programme was started and carried out between RNoN, the Norwegian Research Development Establishment (NDRE) and KONGSBERG.

During the last few years, KONGSBERG has participated in numerous selection processes against our competitors in the above mentioned countries. We are proud to report that NSM had emerged as the preferred choice every time due to the Passive Seeker, the low signature, the Autonomous Target Recognition (ATR) and its Terminal Phase Maneuverability Capability.

Over the years, the NSM has evolved from a Deck-Launched Missile to one which can also be Truck-Launched for Coastal Defence Applications.

The JSM was developedwhen the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) selected the Lockheed Martin F-35A Variant Fighter Aircraft for their F-16 replacement programme. The RNoAF was so pleased with the performance of the NSM that they required similar Maritime and Land Strike Capabilities for their F-35A Fighter Aircraft Fleet. Since NSM would not fit within the weapons-bay of the F-35A, the JSM was developed to satisfy both the performance and design requirements for the F-35A.

In 2024, the JSM will be fully qualified and integrated for the weapons-bay of F-35A, and is ready to be qualified on the wing stations on all F-35 Variants. Our next goal is to integrate JSM on other fighter aircraft and MPAs.

Q. The Indian Navy's MH-60R Multi-Role Helicopters (MRH) Weapons Package is expected to include the KONGSBERG Naval Strike Missile in its Helicopter-Launched Variant, what are your comments on how KONGSBERG's NSM-AL would enhance the MH-60Rs ASuW Capabilities?

A. To address a wider target audience, KONGSBERG designed the NSM-AL (AL being acronym for Air Launched). This variant is intended for Air Platforms such as helicopters, UAVs and RPA, e.g. MQ-9B.

With the NSM-AL in its arsenal, the Indian Navy could now launch its Air Platforms to destroy and neutralize threats from more than 180 km away, leveraging on the NSM-AL's Stand-Off Range. The NSM-AL's range, coupled with its extreme survival capability, will vastly enhance the MH-60R's Anti-Surface Warfare Capabilities and increase the survivability of both the helicopter and the mothership.

Furthermore, we believe that the NSM-AL's Light-weight, Infrared Imaging Seeker, ATR capacity, low RCS, Terminal Phase high maneuverability and extreme capabilities in the littoral environment will complement the Indian Navy's Brahmos Missiles. This would fit well into the overall force structure of the Navy as a Force Multiplier in combined attacks, which could be a deadly game-changer, specifically in  the littorals and in scenarios where target recognition is necessary.

Q. KONGSBERG's NSM is a Fifth-Generation, Long-Range, Precision Strike Missile designed to defeat heavily protected maritime targets in contested environments, tell us about its most salient features?

A. SURVIVABILITY, or the ability to reach the target, is likely the most important feature of any missile. NSM is specifically designed with this as its core feature and this is where NSM excels compared to its competitors. Being Passive and Stealthy, coupled with its ability to super sea skim and extreme agility, NSM avoids detection to minimize the target's reaction time. In the Terminal Phase of the engagement, its small size, low signature and aerodynamic performance makes it almost impossible to defeat, especially since it is also resistant to all known countermeasures.

The NSM's built in ability to define the impact point on the target before launch further enables the missile to attack the target ship with precision to inflict maximum effective damage. All in all, the NSM is designed to be autonomous and deliver a high kill/strike probability, with the ability to be used in a coordinated attacks with the Brahmos Missiles.

In addition, the  NSM has a completely passive, intelligent Imaging Infrared Seeker, which provides two distinct advantages: Firstly, the ability to remain undetected by the enemy warships' Air Defence Systems. A Radar Seeker Missile will be jammed by advanced equipment and trained operators identifying the frequencies and adapting the jamming accordingly. A Radar Seeker Missile, when approaching its target, starts transmitting (its radar) at a long distance, giving away its position and attack angle.

Secondly, the ability to identify the target: An Optical Seeker is able to find, locate and identify the correct target (ATR). In littoral waters the missile will be able to avoid non-enemy targets, islands, etc. These features have made NSM the missile of choice for several Anti-Ship Missile programmes recently, and we are very confident that more Navies will follow suit in the next couple of years.

Q. Tell us about the KONGSBERG Defence & Aerospace contract signed with Australia for the NSM Capability?

A.  While we are not at liberty to divulge the details, we consider the Royal Australian Navy a key customer.

Q.  KONGSBERG has recently received a confirmation that the Royal Spanish Navy will acquire the Naval Strike Missile ( NSM) to replace the Harpoon Missile when it is retired from active service, with the Spanish Navy planning to equip both the existing F-100 Frigates and the new F-110 Frigates with the NSM, tell us more about this new success in Spain?

A.  Again we are not at the liberty to share the details. We are very pleased that the Royal Spanish Navy selected the NSM as their chosen missile system after going through various thorough and comprehensive review and evaluation processes. And we are proud to see that the Royal Spanish Navy has joined the group of other modern Navies as a member of the NSM User Group.

Q. Are you currently tied up with any Indian Company or plan to in future?

A.  We are very pleased to have signed a co-operation MOU with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) recently during DEFEXPO 2022, and are looking forward to develop our relationship and cooperation with HAL in several areas. HAL is well known for its competence and skills, both as a manufacturer of parts for the Aerospace and Defence markets, and as the manufacturer of Airborne Platforms.

Q. Just as we are wrapping-up this interview, UK and Norwegian Authorities announced that they have agreed that the Royal Navy (RN) will receive the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), outfitted on Type 23 Frigates and Type 45 Destroyers, in a collaboration with the Norwegian Government. What can you say about this?

A.  As you mention this is breaking news and a Government-to-Government Agreement. We look forward to support UK and Norway in their ambitious project and are of course proud to see that the Royal Navy has selected NSM as their new Anti-Ship Missile.
