The Embraer Defense & Security New-Generation C-390 Millennium Multi-Mission Tactical Airlifter has already been selected by 10 Nations, including its Aerial Refuelling Tanker Configuration - the KC-390 Multi-Mission Refueller. Embraer is offering the C-390 Versatile Multi-Mission Airlifter to the Indian Air Force (IAF), along with the Embraer’s AEW&C and the A-29 Super Tucano Light-Attack Fighter Trainer. The Embraer ERJ 145 Platforms are serving as the NETRA Airborne Early Warning & Control Systems, which are operated by the Indian Air Force, with the Embraer Legacy 600 Jets are also operated by the IAF & Border Security Force (BSF) for transportation of Government Officials & VIPs. Chanakya Interviews CAETANO NETO, Vice President – Sales & Business Development, Middle East & Asia Pacific, Embraer Defense & Security.

Q.  Briefly outline the success story of the New-Generation C-390 Millennium Tactical Airlifter, with recent selection by Sweden, Czech Republic, South Korea, The Netherlands, Austria and other Nations. What are the highlighting features of the Embraer C-390?

A.  The C-390 is a New Generation, Mission Proven, Military Transport Aircraft, the most advanced in its class. It flies faster, farther and carries more payload than other aircraft in the Medium Transport Category.

Since entering service with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019, the Portuguese Air Force in 2023, and the Hungarian Air Force in 2024, the aircraft has shown 93% mission capability, mission completion rate above 99% and has clocked in more than 16,300 flight hours demonstrating exceptional productivity in its category. In addition to Brazil, Portugal, and Hungary, the C-390 has also been acquired by the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, and South Korea. Sweden also confirmed the selection of the C-390 Millennium, and Slovakia reported that the C-390 was indicated as the best option for updating its transport aircraft fleet. Recently, an undisclosed customer contracted two C-390s to modernise its Air Force.

The C-390 Millennium customers appreciate the versatility, reliability and cost effectiveness of this New Generation Aircraft. The C-390 can be quickly adapted to perform a wide range of missions such as Special Operations, Tactical Transport of troops and vehicles, Medical Evacuation, Disaster Management, Crisis Management, Humanitarian Aid, Aerial Firefighting, or Air-to-Air Refueling.

The C-390 has been designed to operate round the clock from unpaved runways in the most demanding conditions, be it hot and high, cold and dry or humid conditions.

The Millennium is equipped with two Powerful Engines, a State-of-the-Art Avionics Suite, a full Fly-by-Wire Control System, and a complete Self-Protection Suite able to detect and counter E/O and RF guided threats. Its wide fuselage, equipped with a rear ramp can accommodate up to 26 tons of cargo.

The C-390 Millenium is considered a true strategic asset by its end users thanks to its capability to refuel other aircraft and to be refueled mid-air for Long Range Missions. In addition, Embraer’s customers benefit from a complete support and training package in order to ensure a smooth entry into service and to make sure the C-390 is operational anytime, anywhere.

Q.  How do you see the C-390 Multi-Mission Transporter positioned, having already achieved a record of fastest sales since launch in its category, being acquired by many NATO Nations like Portugal, Hungary, The Netherlands, after the 7th delivery to the Brazilian Air Force and first delivery to the Hungarian Air Force?

A.  This New Generation Aircraft is a mission proven and a versatile aircraft by design. This is why the C-390 is the perfect choice for any Air Force, NATO or non-NATO, willing to replace their legacy aircraft or to add new operational capabilities.

We are honoured to be selected by the growing number of countries around the world, and it is an affirmation of the aircraft’s capability and key strengths such as its robust design, greater flexibility, dual certification approach due to a combination of its Civil and Military Concepts, proven state-of-the-art technology and ease of maintenance which provides huge cost benefits during the entire life-cycle.

Q.  With Embraer Defense & Security having products serving above 60 Countries, what are the products of interest for the large Indian Defence & Security market? With the growing impetus in India on ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India), what are Embraer’s initiatives to become an integral part of the campaign and expand the Embraer Supply Chain Base in India?

A.   Embraer Defense & Security has a wide portfolio of aircraft and solutions that are relevant for India, this includes the C-390 Multi-Mission Medium Transport Aircraft, the EMB145 Platform for AEW&C and other Aerial Platforms for Special Missions or ISR.

In February last year, we announced an MoU with Mahindra Defence Systems for the IAF’s MTA Campaign, which will bring the latest technology in this segment to India, in line with the ‘Make in India’ programme of the Indian Government geared towards ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India).

Embraer stands ready to develop a localisation plan for the C-390 if selected for the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme of the Indian Air Force (IAF), with a long-term support offer which will address the indigenous content demand for ‘Make in India’. We are also exploring MRO opportunities in India for the C-390.

Q.  Tell us about Embraer Defense & Security’s Aerial Refueling Configuration KC-390 for the Portuguese Air Force, being the first international customer of the KC-390 programme, followed by the Hungarian Air Force? What are the major characteristics of the KC-390 Refueler Multi-Role Aircraft Variant?

A.   The aircraft configured with Air-to-Air Refueling Equipment, with the designation KC-390, can operate both as a Tanker and as a Receiver – it can receive fuel from another KC-390 using Pods installed under the wings. The KC-390 Millennium is capable of refueling both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft that are fitted with the Probe and Drogue System, operating at speeds from 120 KCAS to 300 KCAS and at altitudes from 2,000 ft to 32,000 ft. In addition, the on-ground refuelling capability of the KC-390 Millennium enables it to refuel vehicles or forward operating bases. KC-390 is a Tactical Tanker and a true Force Multiplier which has a better reach, therefore saving on fuel carrying capacity and less vulnerable to adversaries as compared to a Strategic Tanker.

With the required agility, KC-390 can easily be deployed deeper into a war zone supporting fighters and helicopters for AAR Operations. Additionally, due to its competitive acquisition cost as compared to a Strategic Refueller, more KC-390 assets can be acquired within the same budget increasing the operational flexibility of an Air Force. With that comes the potential for more refuelling points mid-air that will consequently cater to more numbers of Receiver Aircraft.

Q.  Update us on the C-390 Millennium's other Variants, including Firefighting, Medevac, etc. and briefly outline all the different Configurations of Cargo & troops it can carry & launch from its cargo hold, which can be reconfigured for all missions in 3 hours or less? Briefly describe its Advanced Cargo Handling System & Self-Protection Suite as well?

A.  The C-390 Millennium can be re-configured from one configuration to the other within minutes or few hours (depending on the configurations) to perform a wide range of missions such as Firefighting, Medical Evacuation, Humanitarian Support, Search and Rescue, Cargo and Troops Transport, Precision Cargo Airdrop, Paratroopers Operations, Aerial Firefighting and Air-to-Air Refueling (AAR). This enables operators to respond and adapt faster to ever-evolving changes in the global security environment. The C-390 flies faster (470 knots) and further on a standard crew duty day, and also carries more payload (26 tons), including vehicles such as Light Tanks, Personnel Carriers, or Helicopters, compared to other Medium-sized Military Cargo Aircraft.

Given India's diverse and challenging terrains, including high mountains, deep seas, deserts, and dense forests, versatility is crucial, and this is where the C-390 excels. The aircraft was designed to operate on semi-prepared or damaged runways as well as in hostile environments, ranging from hot and humid to cold dry conditions.
To cite some real-life missions: Days after the first KC-390 was received by the Portuguese Air Force in October 2023, the aircraft flew to the United States to take a UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter to Europe. This mission, which covered almost 5,200km, was repeated a month later.

Proving again the Multi-Mission Transport Aircraft’s versatility, the United States Army’s M142 HIMARS Rocket Launcher was loaded onto the Portuguese Air Force’s KC-390 in a testing activity that took place in July 2024. The operation was designed to reinforce NATO’s Interoperability Capabilities. This exercise is a crucial step in enhancing rapid deployment and mobility strategies within Allied Forces.

The aircraft continually demonstrates its Interoperability in complex International Exercises like Storm Flag.
The C-390 Millennium can be equipped with a complete Self-Protection Suite (SPS) designed to detect, avoid, or counter a wide range of threats with 360 Degree coverage.

The Self-Protection Pod fitted on the C-390 creates a complete threat picture and provides advanced jamming techniques that deceive and suppress Radio Frequency Guided threats.

Q.  Kindly highlight the Multi-Mission Capabilities of the Super Tucano and its relevance for India?

A.   As a Multi-Mission Aircraft, the A-29 Super Tucano provides Air Forces with versatility for Armed Reconnaissance, Close Air Support (CAS), Light-Attack, Advanced Training Missions, Airborne Forward Air Control (FAC), Airborne Armed ISR, Border & Coastal Surveillance, UAV Interception/ Targeting/ Armed Interdiction, all on a single platform, which exponentially increases the aircraft's availability and operational flexibility. Its robust airframe allows the aircraft to operate from unpaved runways in austere environment. In all of these areas, it has a proven track record of outstanding performance and reliability.

The A-29 Super Tucano is the global leader in its category, with over 290 orders, surpassing 570,000 flight hours, with 60,000 of those in Combat. In 2024, highlights include new sales of the Super Tucano to the Portuguese Air Force (A-29N), Uruguayan Air Force, the Paraguayan Air Force and orders from an undisclosed country in the APAC Region and in Africa.

It is a relevant aircraft for the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and Border Forces like BSF and ITBP, due to the aircraft’s versatile nature.

In addition to these exceptional features, all in a single aircraft, the A-29 Super Tucano has significantly lower flying costs than similarly capable aircraft. In (semi) permissive environments, it becomes more pragmatic and cost-effective to fly an A-29 Super Tucano than flying a more expensive-to-operate jet-fighter. With A-29’s Cockpit resembling that of a 4th Gen. Fighter Aircraft, it provides a suitable option for training in addition to its broad range of operational capabilities.

It is also interesting to note that compared to sophisticated Attack Helicopters, except for some of these helicopters’ very specialised capabilities, the Super Tucano can offer similar capabilities, and sometimes, better speed and range capabilities at a fraction of the cost.

Q.   Embraer has, together with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) collaborated to produce three ‘Netra’ AEW&C on the Embraer ERJ145 Platform, which is successfully operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF). As there is a long-term large requirement of AEW&Cs in India, what are your plans on offer?

A.   Embraer has a strong experience of incorporating ISR on a variety of our Commercial Aircraft Platforms. Embraer is honoured to have played a part in contributing to India’s Defence and its National Security, in building the Netra AEW&C based on the Embraer ERJ145 Platform together with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) through the Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS).

The ERJ145 has proven its performance and reliability through the operations of the three ‘Netra’ AEW&C and we stand ready to support the IAF for their further requirements.

Q.  Which exhibits/models is Embraer Defense & Security displaying at Aero India 2025 & IDEX 2025?

A.  The Embraer Team will be there in full force and we will have the C-390 Millennium on display at Aero India 2025.
