The subsequent 40 Aircraft will be manufactured and assembled by the Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. (TASL) in India as part of an Industrial Partnership between the two companies.

The first 16 aircraft will be delivered over four years after the contract implementation. All the IAF C295s will be handed over in transport configuration and equipped with an indigenous Electronic Warfare Suite.

“This contract will support the further development of India’s Aerospace Ecosystem, bringing investment and 15,000 skilled direct jobs and 10,000 indirect positions over the coming 10 years,” said Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. “The C295 has proven again as the segment leader, and with the addition of India as a new operator, the type will enlarge its footprint even more, not only on the operational aspects but on its own industrial and technological development”.

Sukaran Singh, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tata Advanced Systems Limited, said, “This is a moment of pride for Tatas and a milestone for the Indian Military Manufacturing Ecosystem. For the first time, an Indian Private Company will be wholly manufacturing an aircraft in India. This endeavour demonstrates Tata Advanced Systems’ capabilities as a Defence Manufacturer to build globally competitive Complex Platforms in India."

‘Make-in-India’ is at the heart of Airbus strategy in India, with the company constantly increasing the country’s contribution to its global product portfolio. The C295 programme will see Airbus bring its complete bouquet of World-Class Aircraft Manufacturing and Servicing to India in collaboration with our Industrial Partners, including the Tatas and leading Defence Public Sector Units such as Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Ltd. (BDL), as well as Private Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

With a proven capability of operating from short or unprepared airstrips, the C295 is used for tactical transport of up to 71 troops or 50 paratroopers, and for logistic operations to locations that are not accessible to current heavier aircraft. It can airdrop paratroops and loads, and also be used for casualty or Medical Evacuation (medevac), as demonstrated during the COVID-19 crisis, using either basic litters or Mobile Intensive Care Units (ICU) with Life Support Equipment. The aircraft can perform Special Missions as well as disaster response and Maritime Patrol duties.

The IAF becomes the 35th C295 Operator worldwide, with the programme reaching 278 aircraft, 200 of which are already in operation and have booked more than half a million flight-hours.

C295: The Most Capable and Versatile Tactical ‘Workhorse’
The Airbus C295 is a New-Generation, very robust and reliable, highly versatile Tactical Airlifter and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) Aircraft able to carry up to nine tonnes of payload or up to 71 personnel, at a maximum cruise speed of 260 kt /480 km/h. Fitted with a Retractable Landing Gear and a pressurised cabin, it can cruise at altitudes up to 30,000 ft, while retaining remarkable Short Take-Off & Landing (STOL) performance from unpaved, short, or soft sandy/grass Airstrips, as well as excellent low level flight characteristics. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G Turboprop Engines, the C295 provides excellent manoeuvrability, outstanding hot and high performance, low fuel consumption and consequently a very long endurance of up to 13 hours in the air.

The new C295 is fitted with Winglets, offering increased performance in all phases of flight, new power generators and improved aircraft general systems meeting the current and future airworthiness requirements. This Version is now the baseline configuration for all C295 Models (Transport and ISR). Winglets provide the following benefits for operators: improved take-off performance at hot and high airfields; higher cruise altitudes especially at high weights; increased endurance; reduced overall fuel consumption between -3% and -6%.

First delivered in 2001, the C295 is a developed version of the well-known CN235 with many component upgrades, and offers greater capacity and range. Its simple systems design and robustness, its proven in service reliability, excellent flying qualities, and great versatility, as well as its remarkable transport capabilities make it the most efficient ‘workhorse’ with the lowest fuel burn, as well as the best operating and maintenance costs in its category. The Civil and Military Certification of the C295 ensures compliance with international airworthiness regulations and safety standards, including the stringent FAR 25 requirements.

At 12.7m /41ft 8 in length, the C295 has the longest unobstructed cabin in its class. It can accommodate up to 71 seats, offering a much higher personnel carrying capability than its competitors in this segment. For the same reason, it can carry much more palletised cargo (up to five 88 inch X 108 inch standard HCU-6E pallets) with direct off-loading through its rear ramp door.

Outstanding performance: The C295’s STOL Capability combined with a strong Landing Gear enable it to operate in the most austere locations with the worst conditions for Take-Off and Landings. The aircraft is a Tactical Military Transport with a light footprint to enable operations from short (no longer than 670m/2,200 ft), or soft (CBR 2) unprepared Airstrips. The C295 is also designed to provide outstanding low-level flight characteristics for Tactical Missions, flying at speeds down to 110kt/200km/hr.

The C295 has an outstanding track record of reliability. With over 160 aircraft in operation, it has amply demonstrated its worth as a highly efficient ‘workhorse’. It is in use for numerous kinds of Military Transport and Surveillance, or civic and humanitarian relief operations, in the most varied environments, ranging from desert to mountainous areas, to hot and dry as well as humid or very cold.

The robustness and versatility of the C295 make it the ideal platform for numerous types of Military, Humanitarian and Government Agency Operations for the benefit of society. The aircraft can perform a wide range of missions such as personnel, troop and bulky/palletised cargo transportation to Casualty Evacuation, Communication and Logistic duties, Search and Rescue, Surveillance and Control, Homeland Security, or certified Air-dropping. It can be rapidly reconfigured between these roles, thus reducing the risk exposure when operating in hostile environments. A key to the aircraft’s unique Patrol and Surveillance Capabilities is the Airbus Defence and Space designed Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) which integrates, controls and displays the Mission Sensors, enhancing Mission Awareness and facilitating decision making.

Proven with the world’s Armed Forces: The C295 aircraft is combat proven and has successfully completed Military Missions in a wide range of environments. It routinely operates in the hot and humid conditions of the Brazilian jungle and Colombian mountains, in the dusty and very hot deserts of Egypt and Algeria, and in the extremely cold and icy winters of Poland, Finland and Kazakhstan. It has been successfully used during long deployments (up to two years, flying up to 100 hours per aircraft per month) in remote areas, such as Chad, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Airbus C295 has become the most trusted Airlifter in its category, being used either as a single transport type, or as a versatile and efficient complement to heavy airlifters and transport helicopters. Thirty-two Nations operate the CN235/295 Light/Medium Airlifters to complement their C-130-class aircraft, including UAE, Brazil, France, Jordan, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain and Turkey.

Being able to operate to and from short or unprepared Airstrips, the C295 is used for Tactical Transport of troops and the required logistic supplies (water, food, ammunition, medical supplies, and spare parts) from the main operating base to Forward Bases, and among forward locations which are not accessible to current heavier aircraft. It can also airdrop paratroops and loads, with the use of 88 in.-width platforms and Container Delivery System (CDS) A22 bundles.

When fitted with the FITS Tactical System, the C295 is ideal for Surveillance (ISR) and Control activities. These include Anti-Terrorism, Maritime and Border Control, Electronic Surveillance, Homeland Security Operations, amongst others.
The Airbus C295 is also available in an Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Version in service with the Chilean Navy. Derived from the Surveillance and Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) Version of the C295, the C295 ASW is equipped with the in-house developed FITS Tactical System proven during MPA/ASW Missions, and Under-Wing Stations to carry weapons and other stores. It represents a modern, risk-free and much more efficient alternative to older generation veterans such as the P-3 Orion or the Breguet Atlantic, while its operating and maintenance costs are significantly lower.

Airbus Defence and Space has flight tested an Airborne Early Warning (AEW) Version of its C295. The Primary Sensor of the AEW to be fitted into the 6m/20 ft Rotodome will be the IAI/ELTA 4th Generation Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar with Integrated IFF. The C295 AEW is to provide high quality 360 Degree Surveillance, creating in real-time an Integrated Air and Maritime Situation Picture and Electronic Order of Battle. The AEW Situation Picture is to be shared with friendly forces via Network Centric Data Links. A C295 fitted with a dummy Rotodome successfully completed flight-trials to demonstrate its aerodynamic suitability and discussions continue with potential launch customers.

Other C295 Special Versions are the Armed ISR to provide Close Air Support to ground troops, convoys, facilities, etc., and Tactical Aerial Tanker, Refuelling Helicopters to increase the radius of action for Combat SAR or Special Ops Missions.

The C295 offers optional Self-Protection Equipment, which is already ready to serve in hostile environments: Cockpit Armour, Radar Warning (RWR), Missile Warning (MAWS), Laser Warning (LWS), and Chaff/Flares Dispensers. In-flight and Ground Refuelling Capability is also optional for the C295.

The Airbus C295 is widely used for humanitarian and other non-military operations by a variety of other Government Agencies. Activities include Surveillance and Control duties such as Search and Rescue (SAR), monitoring of illegal immigration, drug smuggling, piracy, illegal fishery, Maritime Pollution Control and deterrence, and monitoring deforestation.

Because of its Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) characteristics and ability to use short and unprepared Airstrips, the aircraft is also used to bring supplies to people living in remote locations.

In the Maritime Surveillance role the Portuguese Air Force, for example, uses the C295 to patrol Portugal’s huge Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ), including areas around the Azores and Madeira Islands. The Chilean Navy and Brazilian Air Force also use the C295 MSA for Search and Rescue (SAR) Missions in oceanic areas. The Canadian Air Force is the largest C295 MSA customer with sixteen (16) aircraft ordered for SAR and MEDEVAC Operations. The Irish Air Corps will also replace their CN235 MSA Fleet by C295 MSA, not only for Surveillance, but also in support to Special Ops Missions, MEDEVAC Capabilities in hostile areas and Pollution Control.

In humanitarian relief missions such as the tragic earthquake in Haiti in 2010 for example, C295s from the Mexican Navy, were among the first aircraft to provide support. They brought medical and emergency personnel, first-aid supplies such as water, food, medicines, tents, electric generators, water-treatment equipment, but also Police and Security Forces. In their Medevac role, they also evacuated injured patients.

The C295 and its operators have achieved 500,000 flight hours of in all types of environments demonstrating the effectiveness and soundness of the C295’s System Design. The C295 is the perfect ‘workhorse’ offering unique versatility and proven reliability to respond to today’s and tomorrow’s Air Forces' needs.

Jean-Brice DUMONT, Executive Vice President Military Aircraft, Airbus Defence & Space said “The C295 programme will provide the Indian Air Force with a proven platform, an aircraft that is operating globally and has booked more than 500,000 flight hours in service in all kind of environments. With this highly expected and key contract the C295 Family grows up to 35 Operators around the globe and continues building upon its strengths as the global reference in its segment.”

“The signing of the C295 contract marks a new dawn in India’s Defence Industry. The programme will put India on the global map of prominent aircraft manufacturing countries, serving not only the Indian Air Force well, but also the Government of India’s Vision of an AtmaNirbhar Bharat”, said Rémi Maillard, President and MD, Airbus India & South Asia.

"Airbus will bring its complete bouquet of world-class Aircraft Manufacturing and servicing to India in collaboration with our Industrial Partners, including Tata, leading Defence Public Sector Units such as BEL and BDL, as well as Private MSMEs,” Rémi Maillard, President and MD, Airbus India & South Asia, said.

Venkat Katkuri, Head of Defence and Space, Airbus India & South Asia elaborated, “This programme has been in the works for some time now and I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the IAF, MoD and all other Government of India stakeholders for placing their trust in Airbus. We are looking forward to operationalising the project in Partnership with the Tatas and engaging more deeply with the Indian Industrial Ecosystem. Airbus will strive through this and future programmes to develop the local industry and integrate them into our Global Supply Chain under the Vision of ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat’. As an Indian and as Airbus I am eager to see the Indian Industry claim its place on the global stage through this unique ‘Make-in-India’ programme."
