The DEO, Ministry of Defence, Govt of India, organises the biennial International Exhibition on Aerospace, Civil Aviation, Airport Infrastructure and Defence Engineering. Aero India has carved a niche for itself globally as a Premier Aerospace Exhibition, with ten successful editions organised earlier between 1996 and 2015. Aero India 2017, the 11th International Show focuses on 'Make-In-India' in Aerospace, Defence, Civil Aviation, Airport Infrastructure and Defence Engineering, with an overall area of 125000 sqm providing a significant platform in bolstering business opportunities in the International Aviation Sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the previous event last time with the ‘Make-in-India’ backdrop and an Air Display led by formation of three Mi-8 helicopters trooping the National Tricolour, Indian Air Force (IAF) and Aero India flags will again set-off the Aviation-related mega event. The Defence Minister, MoS Defence and the three Defence Service Chiefs, Secretaries of Defence, DRDO and Defence Production, Chiefs of Staff and MoD Delegations from several foreign countries, Senior Officers from the three Defence Services, veterans, and senior executives from the Global and Indian Aerospace & Defence Industry are visiting the Aero India 2017.

The MoD’s Department of Defence Production has taken upon itself the mantle of making the ‘Make-in-India’ in Defence Production a success. Organised by the MoD’s Department of Defence Production, 750 Aerospace & Defence Companies and nearly 300 CEOs from India and abroad, including foreign delegates from above 45 countries are participating in the five-day Aerospace & Aviation Exhibition. Aero India 2017 is an excellent platform for interaction with the stalwarts of the Aerospace, Aviation, Defence & Security Sectors, also showcasing the display of some of the best future global business alliances being formed in India, getting a further boost, with technological displays of high standards and industrial interaction, besides some deals negotiations are also expected to take place.

Flying Displays
The Aerial Display follows the Inaugural Session, which includes an IAF vintage Tiger Moth reminding of our modest origins and Mi-8s and Mirage 2000s take over the skies, transcending into the present era, and aptly in keeping with the ‘Make-in-India’ theme, two indigenous creations - Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and a Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) - dot the horizon in quick succession showcasing India’s technological leap in Aircraft Production. The Sukhoi-30 MKI will keep the gathering spellbound with its versatility and agility. This will follow with impressive displays by a USAF aircraft and French Air Force Rafale Fighters. After the deafening roars of the jets, aerial stunts will also be performed by few foreign Aerobatic Teams as well as India’s Hawk Surya Kirans and Sarang ALHS, enthralling the audience at the Bengaluru Air Show.

The show-stopping moment is provided by ‘Sarang’, the IAF’s Helicopter Display Team in their sprightly coloured, peacock-themed, Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs). By the time Aero India 2017 will conclude, thousands would witness the aerial spectacle of Daily Flying Displays even as serious business deals get negotiated, propelling ‘Self-Reliance in Defence Production’ in keeping with the credo - ‘Make-in-India’, and hopefully by then the “Strategic Partnerships” Chapter of the DPP-2016 will be announced, so that many pending RFPs could be released soon.

IAF’s Sarang Helicopter Aerobatics
Air Shows are essentially about business meetings and exhibits of Military hardware, Systems and Equipment. But over the years the reputation of Aero India Air Show, has also been assiduously built by magnificent displays - Static and Aerial - by both Civil and Military Aircraft, including participation by famed Aerobatic Teams from around the world enthralling audiences. Aero India 2017 would also be much talked about, as the world-acclaimed Aerobatics Teams – Breitling Wingwalkers (US), Scandinavian Air Show, Flying Bulls from Czech Republic, Yakovlevs formation display team from UK – captivated the young and old onlookers alike at the last Show. While all Aerobatic Display Teams will be enthralling to watch, the widest and loudest applause will be reserved for the Indian Air Force Aerobatics Team ‘Sarang’ flown by young IAF helicopter pilots. The IAF Sarang Helicopter Display Team has the unique distinction of being one of only two Helicopter Display Teams in the world, the other being ‘Blue Eagles’ of the British Army.

The Sarang Aerobatic profile begins with entry in an inverted wine glass formation. This is followed by various close formations in ‘Line Astern’ and ‘Diamond’ formation to facilitate a closer look at the helicopters for the audience. Three helicopters then group together to perform the ‘Star’ manoeuvre, which is unique to helicopter flying – the ‘stall turn’ known as the ‘Dolphin’s Leap’. The team then continually keeps the audience glued to the skies with their breath-taking Aerobatic manoeuvres. The Sarang Team then regroups for its final signature manoeuvre ‘The Sarang Split’ involving the four helicopters criss-crossing each other vertically and horizontally to form a knot. Simply breathtaking!

At the Aero India 2017, about 750 companies from India & abroad are participating, with Ministerial/Defence Heads/Secretary level Delegations visiting from many countries, with over 150,000 business visitors and 300,000 general visitors expected to visit. There will be the Youth Innovative Pavilion; India Export Pavilion; Airport Infrastructure; Defence Engineering; and the Aerospace Industry will be well represented with Civil Aviation; Defence Aviation; SMEs and MSMEs; Business-to-Business Meeting Pavilion; Seminars & Conferences; Product Launches and Press briefings and presentations by Industry CEOs, will make Aero India 2017 quite unique, with a large number of media attending as well.

The theme for Aero India is Indigenisation, driving home the ‘Make-in-India’ policy, while the fact remains that India is the largest importer of defence hardware and is still currently globally supplied about 60 to 70% of India’s weaponry. The MoD has repeatedly declared that India should source 70% of its Defence  needs indigenously. Global majors are in the process of consolidating partnerships with Indian Defence Producers to become a part of the Indian Defence Supply Chain. Some tie-ups with Indian companies are also driven by foreign vendors’ Offsets liabilities, which will  accrue from Defence Sales to India. Many of the world’s leading players in Aerospace, Defence & Security Platforms, Equipments and Systems, and Civil Aviation & Space related industries, have a significant presence at Aero India 2017, showcasing their aircraft, UAVs, models, Missiles, latest Equipments and Systems, Components, Ordnance, Optronics, Design & Engineering Services, etc.

Civil & Military Aircraft Display
While the number of aircraft expected to participate in Static and Air Displays is above 70, with scintillating and enthralling displays by Indian Air Force Sarang Team, and some Air Display Teams from abroad will be among the major attractions.
