Embraer Defense & Security at Aero India 2023

EMBRAER DEFENCE

Brazil’s Embraer, the 3rd largest Civil & Defence Aircraft Manufacturer worldwide, is participating at Aero India 2023, having plans for the Indian Air Force future programmes. Embraer Defense & Security plans to boost its local Partnerships and presence in India.

Embraer Defense & Security at Aero India 2023

The Embraer Defense & Security’s Portfolio includes Platforms of interest to India, like the C-390 Millennium New-Gen. Tactical Multi-Mission Airlifter & KC-390 Millennium Refueller Transporter; the Praetor P600 Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) Aircraft and the A-29 Super Tucano Turboprop Light-Attack Fighter & Advanced Trainer.

A Global Aerospace Company headquartered in Brazil, Embraer has businesses in Commercial and Executive Aviation, Defence & Security and Agricultural Aviation. The company designs, develops, manufactures, and markets Aircraft and Systems, providing Services & Support to customers after-sales. Since it was founded in 1969, Embraer has delivered more than 8,000 aircraft. On average, about every 10 seconds an aircraft manufactured by Embraer takes-off somewhere in the world, transporting over 145 million passengers a year.

Embraer is the world’s leading manufacturer of Commercial Jets up to 150 seats and the main exporter of high value-added goods in Brazil. The company maintains industrial units, offices, service and parts distribution centers, among other activities, across the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe.

Embraer Aims to Boost Localisation Plans in Bid to Get More Defence Orders in India
With India expected to spend US$ 130 Billion on Defence Modernisation in the next few years, Brazilian Defence major Embraer Defense & Security plans to boost its local Partnerships in a bid to aid India’s indigenisation ambitions and boost the country’s global Defence Exports. According to a report, a Senior Executive of Embraer said that besides boosting the country’s local manufacturing, Embraer can also help India to become a critical supplier in the Global Supply Chain through its substantial offerings in Aerospace Units. The goal, he said was to boost India’s Domestic Capabilities, while also helping it reach the status of a Global Defence Exporter.

Embraer, the third largest manufacturer of Civil & Military Aircraft after Airbus & Boeing, has also built-up a presence in the Defence Aviation market with sales to NATO Nations like Portugal, Hungary and The Netherlands, among many others. Embraer has already secured some Defence Orders from India. The company’s Legacy 600 Jets are used by the Border Security Force and the Indian Air Force for transporting Senior Government Officials and VIPs. Further, the Brazilian Company also contributed to the development of the IAF’s AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control System) Airborne Radar System. The company has also reportedly been in talks to sell the IAF its C-390 Millennium Military Transport Aircraft, particularly for use in India’s Northern Sectors.

According to the report, the Embraer Executive also laid out the company’s future plans. First, the company hopes to sell India its Multi-Role Light-Attack Aircraft, the A-29 Super Tucano. The Brazilian Aviation Major believes that this platform will prove attractive to the IAF, Indian Navy, Coast Guard and Border Security Force. This platform is currently used by The Philippines, Indonesia, Lebanon and a number of Latin American Air Forces. Embraer also hopes to use its prior experience in Radar Systems to help India manage its Land and Coastal Borders.

India is a key market for Embraer and the company was keen to establish local Partnerships in the country that can further boost India’s Defence Industries and Capabilities. Embraer has been in talks with various Indian Companies for prospective partnerships not only for the requirements from Indian Armed Forces, but also to meet global requirements. Embraer views India not as a customer, but as a promising business partner. In recent years, the Defence relationship between India and Brazil has grown significantly.

Embraer Defense & Security Portfolio Strengths
With one of the most comprehensive portfolios and Innovative Solutions for the Defence and Security markets, Embraer is present at the Aero India 2023 Exhibition & Air Show in Bengaluru. Embraer’s Defence & Security Products and Solutions, which are present in more than 60 countries, include the New-Generation Multi-Mission Transport Aircraft C-390 Millennium, the A-29 Super Tucano Light Attack and Training Aircraft, and the Praetor P600 AEW&C Aircraft, in addition to broader Tactical Solutions for Air, Land, Sea, Space and Cyber Domains.

KC-390 Millennium Multi-Mission Aircraft
The C-390 Millennium and its Air-to-Air Refueling Configuration, the KC-390, are the New-Generation of Multi-Role Military Transport Aircraft already delivering unrivaled mobility and cargo capacity, rapid re-configuration, high availability, improved comfort, and flight safety, as well as optimal management of reduced operational costs through its life-cycle - all in a single platform.

Since its first delivery to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) in 2019, the KC-390 Millennium has proven its capability, reliability and performance. The aircraft was extensively used in operations to transport equipment and medical supplies, ranging from liquid oxygen to vehicles across Brazil at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The FAB’s current fleet of KC-390s stands at five units, all of which are fully operational. Together, the fleet has exceeded 5,000 flight hours in operation with a high mission completion rate of 97%, demonstrating outstanding availability and productivity in its category.

The Hungarian Defence Force and the Portuguese Armed Forces have signed orders for the aircraft. Both the Portuguese and Hungarian Fleets will be configured to perform Air-to-Air Refueling and be fully NATO compatible, not only in terms of hardware, but also in terms of Avionics and Communications. The Hungarian Defence Force Fleet will be the first in the world to feature an Intensive Care Unit Configuration, an essential feature for performing Humanitarian Missions. In June 2022, The Netherlands Ministry of Defence announced the selection of a fleet of five C-390 Millennium Aircraft, highlighting the performance and operational output of the aircraft, to succeed their current fleet of C-130 Hercules.

The C-390 Millennium is the New-Generation Military Multi-Mission Airlifter that brings unrivaled mobility, high productivity and operation flexibility at low operational costs on a single and unique modern platform. The C-390 is capable of transporting and launching cargo & troops, while performing a wide array of missions including: Medical Evacuation, Search & Rescue, Humanitarian Search & Rescue, Aerial Refueling (Fighters & Helicopters), Aerial Fire-Fighting and Humanitarian Assistance. As a truly Multi-Mission Aircraft, the C-390 Millennium Platform provides unmatched versatility to configure the aircraft to accomplish a broader range of missions. It is already selected by Brazil, Portugal, Hungary & The Netherlands.

Aerial Refueling at High & Low Speeds: The KC-390 Variant is capable of refueling both Fixed and Rotary-Wing Aircraft, operating at speeds from 120 KCAS to 300 KCAS and at altitudes from 2,000 ft to 32,000 ft. The KC-390 Millennium on-ground refueling capability can be used to refuel vehicles or Forward Operating Bases as well, besides having buddy-buddy Refueling Capabilities.

The Cargo Floor, an integral part of the C-390 main structure, is designed with the strength to transport Heavy-Tracked and Wheeled Vehicles of up to 26,000 kg (57,320 lbs). An optimized tie-down grid of rings with 10,000 lbs and 25,000 lbs of restraint in any direction ensures quick configurations changes and great cargo load flexibility.

A-29 Super Tucano Turboprop Light-Attack Fighter Trainer
Regarding the A-29 Super Tucano, the worldwide fleet of the aircraft crossed 500,000 flight hours. With more than 260 Units delivered, the aircraft has already been selected by more than 15 Air Forces worldwide, with the most recent deliveries being to The Philippines and Nigerian Air Forces.

Embraer earlier announced the beginning of the engagement process for OGMA S.A., Embraer’s subsidiary in Portugal, to perform Support and Maintenance for the A-29 Super Tucano, as well as future modifications to the aircraft to meet the requirements of current and future customers in the region. Thus, OGMA will be the first company in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) to have these capabilities. Currently, OGMA already provides Logistical Support for the A-29 Super Tucano Demonstrator, which has the Portuguese company as its base of operations, allowing technicians to enable Demonstration Missions around the world for future customers.

With more than 260 Units delivered worldwide, the A-29 aircraft has already been selected by more than 15 Air Forces, including Armed Forces from EMEA Region such as Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Angola.

“We are following market developments for the A-29 Super Tucano and intend for OGMA to become a Service Center of Excellence for the aircraft,” said Johann Bordais, President & CEO, Embraer Services and Support. “OGMA is a strategic asset for Embraer in the EMEA Region, playing a central role in many present and future projects of our company.”

Initially, OGMA will be certified for the A-29 Maintenance, which aims to generate revenue in the provision of services to current customers, creating another immediate opportunity for OGMA to continue to grow, generating value in Portugal and strengthening the Portuguese Aeronautical Cluster. In the next step, another opportunity will be open for the company associated with the A-29 Modernisation to respond to the future needs of its current operators.

“The A-29 Super Tucano is generating a lot of interest in several European Air Forces. Embraer, together with OGMA on the Services field, is preparing to respond to the market by executing the modifications and technological evolution that are requested to meet various missions in the most effective way,” said Jackson Schneider, President & CEO Embraer Defense and Security.

The most recent investment of 74 Million Euros in OGMA, allowing the company to obtain certification for the maintenance of Pratt & Whitney's GTF Engines, used by the New-Generation of Commercial Aircraft. This agreement also reflects Embraer's interest in expanding the scope of its activities in Portugal.

The Partnership is supported by Embraer's more than 50 years of history and experience in developing, certifying, manufacturing, marketing aircraft and providing after-sales services.

Embraer and the Brazilian Army Phase Two of the SISFRON Programme of Integrated Border Monitoring System
Embraer and the Brazilian Army last year had signed a contract to develop and implement Phase Two of the Army's Strategic Programme for the Integrated Border Monitoring System (SISFRON). Among the world’s largest Border Surveillance Projects, SISFRON aims to protect Brazil's Borders, covering an extension of 16,886 kilometers across ten bordering countries.

“We are very pleased to sign the SISFRON Phase Two contract with Embraer, in continuation of the successful partnership and significant results already proven with the implementation of the Pilot Phase and complementing the operational capabilities of the Western Military Command,” said Army Science and Technology Department Chief, General Guido Amin Naves. “The SISFRON is technologically complex and of a strategic nature, which is why it is one of the Land Force’s Structuring Projects in partnership with Embraer, in the role of Integrator, endowing the Brazilian Army with capabilities to execute its mission. Additionally, the programme will enhance action taken by other Government entities in the border area.”

The SISFRON implements a Sensing and Command and Control Structure in support of Land Forces’ Operation, acting in an integrated way to strengthen the State’s presence and capacity to monitor and act on its borders, while enhancing the performance of other Government entities with responsibilities over this area.

“The signing of the SISFRON Phase Two contract is an important recognition of Embraer's investment and effort in the implementation of the Pilot Phase, making use of the company's main competencies applied to Land Systems. We are sure that the continuity of the implementation with the next phase will enable us to retain and further develop knowledge and technologies that are critical to Brazil’s Border Surveillance Area,” said Jackson Schneider, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security.

The implementation of the programme has contributed to the increase of technological capacity, as well autonomy and sustainability of the Industrial Defence Base, by means of the acquisition of high added value solutions and with the diversification of national exports.
