The OWS is also ideal for retrofit of existing vehicles such as the BMP2. The Turret is fit for the installation of two Anti-Tank Ground Missiles (ATGM). Considering the interest shown by the Indian MOD towards the OWS Turret, the technical/commercial activities are carried out through a MoU signed between OTO Melara and Pipavav with a massive transfer of know-how in case the Turret is selected by the Indian MoD for the various Land Programmes. Land Systems

During OTO Melara’s extensive history of over one hundred years of excellence in developing, manufacturing and maintaining Land Defence Systems, the Users were always in the focus of its activities. OTO Melara sees it as its core, to improve customers satisfaction day by day. Currently, OTO Melara are providing three state-of-the-art Turret Land-Defence Systems: HITFACT (Heavy Calibre Turrets), HITFIST (Medium-Calibre Turrets) and HITROLE (Small Calibre Turrets).

The Turret layouts are designed to be able to be supplied in various weights and sizes in order to permit a rapid deployment, and meet the specific needs of customers. Furthermore, in offering the PzH2000 and the 105/14mm, OTO Melara provides excellence in the Artillery field. With the high precision ammunition Vulcano Family, the Surveillance System Vistars and Battle Management Systems (Siccona) it completes their product portfolio in the Land Systems. 105/14mm

The 105/l4mm Pack Howitzer is a light-weight easily dismountable and transportable field weapon. The howitzer can be towed or transported by light vehicles or even by a pack of animals; lifted by helicopters, air-transported and parachute-dropped in one piece and immediately ready for fire.

105/120mm

HITFACT is a three-man, power operated turret armed with a 120mm, 45 calibre or 105mm, 52 calibre low-recoil-force gun, intended for installation on light and medium weight tanks and wheeled or tracked tank destroyers.

HITFIST 30mm OWS - A Novel Multi-Role Unmanned Turret

The HITFIST OWS incorporates the latest available technologies in the fields of mechanics, electronics, protection, signature, optronics and software and it is the best of-class in terms of lethality, survivability and fightability performing as a real Unmanned Turret. As a matter of fact the system can be operated from remote position by one or two operators and further more the crew, under protection and standing up from the own seat, can perform the 360° direct vision of the battlefield through the episcopes as well as the ammunition reloading and simple maintenance operations. These operations can be performed by a dedicated hatch opened in the floor of the turret/roof of the vehicle. The HITFIST 30mm OWS has the capability to cover different roles: the main role is to pierce the armour of IFV vehicles in the same class and possibly in higher class. This is possible and with high hit probability at the first shot for the Fire Control System and the Servo System do allow this performance.
Secondary role is Anti-Helo role where the HITFIST 30mm OWS has remarkable performances due to the high accuracy of the gun, the auto tracking (option) and the elevation of 70°, which represents an unequalled value for RWS of the same size and calibre. Finally a further role is anti-troops in the open or in fox hole where Air-Burst Ammunition (ABM) and 40mm Supershot can provide the best effectiveness. The HITFIST 30mm OWS is a remotely controlled, two axis Stabilized Weapon System, without hull penetration, installable on any tracked and wheeled platforms. The system can be completely controlled by one man of the crew (the Gunner) from a remote position through a dedicated console installed within the vehicle hull. An Optronic Sight integrating a CCD Camera, an IR Camera and a Laser Range Finder, mechanically linked to the main weapon (optionally the Camera can be independently stabilized), gives the system day/night operational capabilities.
The HITFIST OWS includes a ballistic computer particularly accurate and performing when firing against a moving target at long ranges. Moreover, the HITFIST 30mm OWS has been designed to integrate with a few modifications a GEN-II Anti-Tank Guided Missile; in such case, guidance of missiles can be integrated with the onboard LCD displays and the joy sticks.
The HITFIST 30mm OWS elevation and traverse movements are actuated by electric servo systems and it is fitted with manual back up handles both in azimuth and elevation and manual firing trigger. As a matter of fact the HITFIST OWS main sub-systems like electronic boxes, Servo Systems, Ammunition belt and ammunition boxes are fully protected. Moreover the system is ready to be used and make fire without any preparation. HITFIST’s power operated turret armed with a 30mm Automatic Chain Gun Cannon, a 7.62mm Coaxial Machine Gun and two elevation controlled TOW Missile Launchers, as an additional option.

HITROLE 7.62 - 12.7 - 40mm AGL

HITROLE is a one-man, electrically power-operated Turret for Light Vehicles, consisting of a 12.7 (or 7.62) mm Machine Gun or 40mm AGL Overhead and an Under-Armour Control System.
HITROLE Light is a state-of-the-art Lightweight Remote Weapon Station (RWS) performing multi-role capabilities like Surveillance, Patrolling in urban environment and Borders Security, counter sniper and asymmetric missions.

OTO Melara Robotics

OTO Melara is focussing its Research & Development activities, concerning Robotics, on designing an original Robotic Systems able to perform routinely Surveillance and Patrolling Tactical Operations. In fact, automating such a task can contribute noticeably to information control, allowing Command to acquire and maintain a significant advantage in the operations development.
OTO Melara is proud to offer a family of highly mobile robotic vehicles, both tracked and wheeled, which offer excellent performance in terms of their load capacity, speed, precision, and controllability. The UGVs, which are constructed around a precise modular architecture, can take onboard a range of actuators and sensors, which make the vehicles capable of the efficient undertaking of different missions. The family consists of a complete series of robotic platforms starting to the smallest 3 kg 4 wheels TRP 3 – Frog to the biggest 200 kg 6 x 6 PRAETOR passing through the EOD specialized TRP 1, the Mines-Detector Light Tracked Dual-use Platform both TRP 2 in military version and TRP 7 – HS supporting the Home Land Security Forces.
The Aerial Team highlights IBIS, a rotating wings 10 KG class platform, and the Multi-Purpose Robot “HORUS”, rapidly deployable, low-cost and consequently “spendable”, able to provide directly, effectively and continuously a real-time video streaming regarding the area of tactical interest, performing functions of patrolling, scouting and target acquisition. The Control Ground Station, which is unique for all the vehicles, derives directly from OTO Melara’s lengthy experience in the field of the Remote Control and ruggedisation of arms systems.

Mini UAVs

HORUS: The Aerial Multi-purpose Robot “HORUS” is a determinant instrument to fit short-range RISTA mission requirements. In fact it is rapidly deployable, low cost and consequently “spendable”, and it provides directly and continuously an information stream regarding the area of tactical interest, performing functions of patrolling, scouting and target acquisition effectively.
OTO E TRP5 IBIS: OTO E TRP5 IBIS is a rotating-wing UAV, electrically powered with a standard mission time-length of 35 minutes. Its aerodynamic configuration is based on a conventional helicopter concept: the main rotor provides thrust for cruise flight, hovering and control, while the tail rotor provides yaw moment compensation and stabilisation.

Air Systems

OTO Melara, through its branch Breda Meccanica Bresciana, equipped Italian aircraft with its rapid-fire armament up to the 2nd World War. In the 1980s, due to Italian Air Force requirements, OTO Melara began to produce under licence the 20 mm M61A1 Vulcan installed on the AMX attack aircraft as well as the GAU-12/U 25mm Gatling Gun installed on Italian Navy AV-8B Plus Harriers.
OTO Melara, in the fixed-wing aircraft field, is also active in the Eurofighter Typhoon programme for which it designed and produced the linkless conveyor for the Mauser 27mm Gun. New warfare scenarios require increasing pinpoint accuracy for fixed-wing aircraft; the percentage of the so-called "smart" bombs among Air Forces inventories is steadily increasing. OTO Melara entered this field through licence agreements with Boeing and Raytheon and is acting as prime contractor for contracts with the Italian Air Force and Navy.
